GSU 2024: Bridging Gaps

Accessibility is the concept that focuses on enabling access for everyone. Accessibility encompasses a broader concept of inclusivity and equal opportunity. Although the world is evolving quickly, it is clear that not everyone has access to equal education and opportunity, particularly women in STEM fields. By focusing on making STEM opportunities easily and readily available to everyone, our hopes are to help improve access to STEM fields to increase the participation of women.

Advocacy is a powerful and purposeful activity aimed at raising awareness to promote change. Girls STEM Up are advocating for equity as a fundamental driver of societal progress. To empower individuals and groups to have their voices heard, and make contributions is the goal for all women in STEM.

Allyship is defined as the action of being joined together because of shared interests or goals. Connection is important especially when it comes to women in STEM. When an alliance is formed with other individuals or organisations, it allows opportunities to provide support for those trying to get involved in the field. Those with more experience or knowledge of the field can act as allies for those who are trying to pursue a STEM related profession.

Diversity is the practice of incorporating individuals from a range of various social and cultural backgrounds as well as different genders and sexual orientations. STEM is made of people from a variety of backgrounds which can shape their path to having opportunities in the STEM field. By embracing our differences, we can celebrate diversity of the human experience and enrich each other's lives allowing for women from any background to participate in STEM!

Opportunity is a door opening to new possibilities, growth, and progress. Women in STEM frequently face barriers when it comes to the availability of opportunities. Expanding the amount of opportunities for women in STEM will allow them to make significant contributions in their respective fields. Opportunities are a catalyst for change and a reminder that the future is filled with potential. We are striving to recognize and embrace opportunities to contribute to the progress of our Girls in STEM community.
